Dirt Bike Maintenance Checklist (Daily, Weekly, Monthly)
Quick verdict: Five minutes after every ride saves you 5 hours of repair every quarter. The list below is what we hand to every customer at delivery.
After every ride (5 minutes)
- Wipe down the bike — focus on the chain, sprockets, radiator (gas), and battery vents (electric)
- Visual check: any leaks under the bike (oil, coolant, fork oil)?
- Squeeze brake levers — both should feel firm, not spongy
- Tire spin check — any wobble or rub?
- Chain slack — should deflect about 1.5″ mid-span
Weekly or every 5 hours of ride time
- Lube the chain (after cleaning)
- Check tire pressure cold — see tire pressure guide
- Air filter inspection — clean or replace
- Tighten spoke nipples (light hand on a spoke wrench)
- Brake pad thickness — replace if under 2mm
- Electric: clean battery vents, inspect connector for corrosion
- Gas: check oil level (with bike upright on level ground)
Monthly or every 20 hours
- Change engine oil (gas)
- Check valve clearances if due (gas, varies by engine)
- Inspect fork seals for weeping
- Inspect wheel bearings — wheels should spin freely with no side-play
- Inspect swingarm pivot — grease if you have a grease nipple
- Brake fluid level
- Electric: charge cycle balance check (most BMS apps show per-cell voltage)
Seasonally / every 50 hours
- Coolant change (gas)
- Fork oil change
- Rear shock service (every 100 hours typically)
- Chain + sprockets — replace as a set when chain stretches 1%
- Cable lube (clutch, throttle on gas)
- Wheel truing
FAQs
Do electric dirt bikes need oil changes?
No engine oil. Some have a small gearbox with oil that’s changed every 50–100 hours.
Can I use car motor oil?
No — use motorcycle-rated oil (JASO MA2). Car oil has friction modifiers that slip the wet clutch.
How often should I replace the chain?
Every 30–80 hours depending on riding style and lube schedule.
